Horse Care Training Days with Richard Johnston-Smith, BHS Accredited Performance Coach.

There are four days of training open to anyone who would like to develop their knowledge or prepare for the Stage 3 assessment. Each day you will work in a small group with Richard. The days will be divided between yard, with hands-on training, and classroom based sessions.

The yard sessions will be hands-on practical including fitting and assessing tack, looking at conformation and clipping.

The classroom based sessions will be theory including fittening, anatomy and physiology, and biosecurity.

You will:
  • Be assessed on your knowledge to manage day-to-day activity, care and welfare of horses under your responsibility, with an established awareness of current legislation for working within a stable yard environment.

  • Show competence in understanding equine behaviour, physiology and measuring vital health signs.

  • Be assessed on recognising and treating common conditions and nutritional requirements of the horse, including assessment of condition and measurement of nutrition alongside fittening of the horse.
